GENERAL In
keeping with the ideals of IRLP Godfather Dave Cameron VE7LTD, this
node is open to all licensed amateurs. All incoming calls are accepted
and currently there is no access code required to call other nodes.
When there's no human (!) sitting beside the box to directly monitor
what's happening, REFLECTORS MAY BE BLOCKED as per the International
IRLP guidelines for simplex nodes. This means that if you try to access
a reflector and get the dreaded "no calls allowed to this node"
message, Johnno could be off somewhere doing something else!
How to call When calling another node, identify your station and the name or
number of the node you are calling, then key in the remote node DTMF
numbers. After the "Link On" announcement, AND BEFORE YOU PUT OUT A
CALL, wait approx 10 seconds to make sure you don't interrupt anything
that may be in progress at the other end.
If the node you call is connected to a reflector (you'll hear a
message), you can possibly catch the station you want by simply
connecting to that reflector and giving them a call ......some nodes
use reflectors as a "meeting place". Conversely if our node is already
connected to a reflector and you'd like to call another node, it's OK
for you to ask if someone is using it, and if not, disconnect from the
reflector with either "73" or "#".
What to do between overs
On each over, leave a 1 - 2 second pause after pressing the mic
switch.......this allows for link delays and stops the first part of
your audio from being cut off. Of course as per any other Amateur
on-air procedure, it goes without saying that it's accepted practice to
let anyone else break in by leaving a reasonable pause between overs,
say 2 or 3 seconds.
The dreaded time-out GOTCHA **** Be aware that there is a 5 minute timeout for IRLP. If you
transmit to the node for more than this in any one over, the machine
will cut you off and whatever connection was running will go west as
well! Many repeaters that may be connected at any time will have even
less timeout, so it's advisable to keep your transmissions reasonably
short, as if you were operating through the "local" repeater ****
After you're finished Before disconnecting after the QSO it's considered courteous to ask
if anyone else would like to use the connection. To disconnect, use
DTMF 73 or #. It's not necessary to use the disconnect code if the node
being called was busy, or not available for some other reason.
Bear in mind that when a connection is made (other than to a
reflector), a recorded announcement of the calling node is played over
the remote node, so if you simply connect to another node and then
disconnect without saying anything, like someone "kerchunking" a
repeater, "they" know which node was responsible. This sort of thing is
unwelcome, and can lead to a node being blacklisted so please let's not
let it happen here.
Best place for the good oil is IRLP Net, and a list of all the "nodes" is available at NODE STATUS
