Email

Email addresses are not free.  If you access the internet (either dial up or broadband) through our service then an email address  is included however if you do not access the Internet  through our service then unless you subscribe to our email only service you will lose your email address.

Using an Email client: If downloading your email is interrupted (ie: you terminate the connection, your phone line drops out, or some other reason) then we have a safety measure in place so you don't lose your email. Usually within 10 minutes your mailbox will reset itself ready to receive your request again. This is evidenced by a password error. Some times the mail transfer may become corrupt (this more commonly occurs with Outlook Express).  If this occurs Click here and enter your username (first part of email address before the @ symbol) and follow the instructions.  If  however it has not been able to reset itself then simply phone us so that we can involve a human.

Web Mail can be used from anyone's computer, anywhere in the world. It enables you to check what messages are waiting for you, read them, reply to them, and even delete them. It provides you with another way of finding out what's in your mailbox and if there is maybe a large email that is blocking the rest of your messages. You can then retrieve the messages using your email program. You cannot view attachments (photos, documents etc) via Web Mail. If however you have not completed downloading your mail using your email program then viewing what's in your mailbox via Web Mail won't be available for around 10 minutes. This is evidenced by a password error message.

Email Client Outlook Express does have limitations, but generally works ok. Please be aware that any Microsoft product is targeted by virus writers and hackers. Like any email software it needs to be told what to do (this is called configuration) and this section is found under
Tools - Accounts - Mail

To set up a new account you simply click on ADD and then follow the questionaire using the answers below.
To check the configuration of an account that is already set up simply click on Properties
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): postbox.midcoast.com.au or mail.adnet.com.au
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.midcoast.com.au
Account Name: the first part of your email address - before the @ or if you have an adnet address your account name is your email address

If you prefer a more stable and reliable Email Client you can use Eudora. We have been using this one for 9 years. It can be downloaded from EUDORA. Eudora is self installing and will come up with a set up wizard as soon as you double click on the file - all you need is the correct answers to the questions. To check the configuration go to Tools - Options
Getting Started:
POP a/c: yourusername@postbox.midcoast.com.au or yourusername @mail.adnet.com.au
Hosts:
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.midcoast.com.au

Entourage is an email client that's Mac specific. Its configuration can be found in Tools- Accounts - Mail - Account Settings
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): postbox.midcoast.com.au or mail.adnet.com.au
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.midcoast.com.au
Account Name: the first part of your email address - before the @ or if you have an adnet address your account name is your email address

Filtering out the junk

Overwhelmed by email?
There's a lot of "mail" circulating the Internet.  It's mostly junk with no purpose, nothing to say and if it does contain links it's usually porn or drugs.  You can't reply and tell them to "shove off" because the sender's email is a dummy.  From what we see it is threatening to turn a really useful means of communication completely useless.  It can be annoying, overwhelming, and even scary.

Most email programs have a function called "filtering" that you can set so that any mail directed to you (yourusername@midcoast or @adnet, and that's the first part of the address) in one of the header fields gets shunted automatically into a new folder in your email program that you set up. So what you see when you check your mail is your 40 messages coming in, and then when it's all loaded, you find that only the four or five addressed to you personally  are in your in box.  All of the other mail has flown into the new directory by itself, where you don't have to sort through it right away, but can read it (or not) whenever you like. If we at ADNET didn't use filters, we would go loony with all the mail we get.

At ADNET we use Eudora Mail, (www.eudora.com).

There are many email clients and they are constantly being updated so we can't be specific here. We suggest checking the resources for your software. Here are, for example, the instructions for Eudora (Windows version) and Eudora (Mac version). Your email program's "help" file contains more information about customising mail filters. (Look in the "help" section under "filters" or "filtering" or consult the online tech support area on your email client's Web site. However, it is not difficult to do. These are very general instructions to give you an idea:

  1. Open your email program.
  2. Locate the Filters section, usually found under Edit, Options, Window, or Tools on the menu bar.
  3. Click New and type the name of the new filter. Make sure it's easy to remember, such as "Friends."
  4. Enter the filter conditions, or "rules." Conditions are requirements the email must meet (for example, the sender is myfriend@isp.com.au) in order for the action (such as placing it is a particular mailbox or folder) to take place. Configure the filter by telling it that anything with "myfriend@" in the header--any part of the header--should be moved or transferred into the directory "Friends." Don't tell it to filter the whole address, myfriend@isp.com.au, because sometimes mail will come to you on the list from a slightly different address like myfriend@mail.isp.com.au, and it won't be filtered if there isn't an exact match.
  5. Select the action you want the program to perform with filtered email....eg you'll want to transfer messages to a specific folder or mailbox.
  6. Click OK or Save to save your new filter.

    Proxy Servers

A proxy server remembers frequently visited web sites and therefore can deliver webpages to you faster if you have told your browser to use one. To find out whether you have a proxy server configured in Internet Explorer go to Tools - Options - Connection - Settings. If you have a tick in "use a proxy server" you must have the name of our proxy which is proxy.midcoast.com.au and the PORT number is 8080. It is important to remember that YOU DO NOT have to use a proxy server for our service and at any time you can browse the WWW with it enabled or not.

Dial In numbers are provided in the following locations:

0198 333 699 (Nationwide)
0198 308 016 (Rural NSW)

ADSL Troubleshooting Tips

Reboot Meditation works for dial up and for ADSL.  Power down your computer and turn it off, then turn off the power to your ADSL modem.  Take a deep breath,  count to 30 and then turn on the modem and then turn on your computer.  Breathe!

Now and then when you first try to logon to the Internet it won't work.  First thing you need to do is reboot (as above) - sometimes you will need to do this a couple of times.

If it is still not going check that the ADSL light is lit on your modem.

Then do a line isolation test - this is where you remove all phones, fax machines, other computers from the ADSL line.  Does it work now?  If not remove the filter (goes between the modem and the wall socket) and see whether you have action.  If you still can't get online and you are positive that your modem is not at fault then give us a call and we will lodge a fault.  Please be aware that should we lodge a fault and the problem is found to be with your equipment or at your premises that a call out fee of approx $200 applies.
